The Opening Night. Aftermath...

The opening night was indeed a success.

All up i ended up taking a whopping 1016 photos that calculated to be just a little bit over 10 GB. Awesome. I would like to thank all of you for participating in my work and making it a total success. I hope you all had fun.

I thank you for having your picture taken, taking your own personal photos of yourself and others inside the space, looking at the pictures on the all of other people who had been in the space previously and even looking at others had fun overall. i really thank you.

Without your interactivity the work would have not been possible.

The photos, as i have said to some people WAS going to be uploaded by Monday. However... 1027 photos is impossible to upload on this small blog spot so i ask for your patience and the photos will be released by MONDAY 1st DECEMBER 2008. I encourage you to take them and share them with others on your face books and store them in your hard drives. Please also do not hesitate to ask me by email for the original larger sizes. (It is better to print in larger sizes)

Once again thank you for your participation. I hope to see you guys again on my camera sometime in the near future. and remember 1st Dec come back to see your photos!

The Opening Night.

Today is the 21st of November. The Day of our UWS 2008 GRADSHOW.

Tonight will be the launching of my work.

I will be taking a series of surveillance photographs of people who come in my space and play. I will print some photos and stick them up on the wall during the course of the night. Most of the photos will be continually uploaded on this blog space during 6-9pm tonight.

YOUR DIGITAL IMAGE WILL STREAM THROUGH NETWORKS AND DIGITAL DATA.

AND SOMEONE WILL BE WATCHING.

My friend is mixing the album for an indie band in Korea called Orgeltanz. They are influenced with Turkish music.. which is interesting... The lead singer is Korean but raised in turkey.... so she sings in both languages.. Their sound is accordion and violin influenced. totally interesting. It really sets the weird kooky atmosphere of my space. So i contacted the producer of Orgeltanz in which he authorised me to play their not yet released album in another country. (i am totally grateful and honoured!)

My wood arrive today... a whole two hundred and eight dollars and forty cents worth of it.
I have to cut the door out and the hole for the lens to fit through, sand it, paint it and nail the material on the top.

which reminds me.. i have roughly two weeks left and i have done nothing. :( oh dear.

My List TO DO's...

1. Make and finish BOX.
2. Order the mask and wallpaper.
3. Bring in the furniture.
4. Get the CCTV's and Monitors.
5. Record the empty space.
6. Test shots in the space. check printer is working.
7. Do the exegesis

OK... its much more in perspective now.
and instead of the weight lifting off my shoulders...

What is the relationship between the mechanical eye and the eye of the human? There is a tangible relationship between people and the tracking of images from the eye of the surveillance style camera. There is an undefinable aura or punctum in certain images collected, shared and reproduced through out the socio-networking culture society. I believe we are in the midst of some what a revolution clouded with confusion and delusion with the accelerated intensity of modernist threads in technology. We are possibility at the peak stage of what Walter Benjamin called ‘the age in mechanical reproduction’.

Through technological advancements on the interface of the world wide inter-web and the diaspora of social networking platforms, I see individuals grouping together into a homogenous culture. I consider this to be so from the development of enhanced communication. On the internet there is a universe of communication through connections, contact, contiguity, feedback, showing and sharing. I am thoroughly interesting in the key aspect use of the camera and the images of real live performance presented to the self and the viewer. I find that there is a lot more of a ‘showing and telling’ characteristic in today’s present socio-networking society. It has become ‘our’ culture to not only inform, illustrate, notify and present ourselves but also to share, receive and acquire this information and knowledge.

One of the predominant areas of studies that have raised awareness is in the course of the visual and multimedia arts. Art practises, such as ‘Access’, 2003 by Marie Sester is a prime example in which I wish to examine. Her work includes the utilising of surveillance cameras and allowing the internet public from any location of the world to track a spotlight on a random individual within that space. Her work keeps between the line of being intimidating but also good natured. Once again, I raise the question of the tangible relationship between who is being watched and who is watching through the mechanics and technology of the camera. There is an ambiguity that stretches further because of the connections of the accelerated internet community.

I wish to observe this interactivity and examine the forms of controls it attains. There is to some extent a conscious and subconscious attitude in considering the approval or agreement in being surveillanced. Through the rise of the surveillance society I wish to investigate these practises and to see where we draw the line in to say whether this is satisfactory, acceptable and permissible.

Commercial look into the Everyday...

Most Asians like things in groups or in masses...
they like following trends and looking high in society... (the LV bags and the Gucci, Burberry etc)
it makes me wonder if the internet has anything to do with this spreading disease of popular mass taste... does that even make sense?

anyway... in a way they really exceed in aesthetics.
one thing i am really interested and suprised in is the trend in photography.
There is at least 1 photo studio in every neighborhood in korea for taking family photos.

The asian studio was always a little different from the western studios.
In western studio's they would have boxes they use as chairs and cover the boxes with drapes.
In an asian studio they would have a big sturdy and pretty looking chair where the mother and father sits and the rest of the family would stand behind them... this is your typical korean family portrait hung up on every living or lounge room....

HOWEVER, things have bling bling-ed since a couple of years.
there are newer studio's with interior and exterior set designs.
If you thought that this could only happen in the movies or in commercial industry, its not any more. Normal everyday people are utalising the new studio's with pretty and aesthetic set up interiors. The aura of the location definately has aesthetic qualities and makes you feel more special... they are being used more for wedding shoots now.. but... i think this will become the norm for future photo studio's.

The change of interior, and the detail of props, the colour and texture of the walls...
they emit ultra cool waves of aesthetic aura.

this is really an interesting aspect... of finding and connecting with space and the aura of what you see from two dimension photographs to actually being emersed in the true atmosphere...

I've been sick for the past 1 week... with a fever rising and falling...
in the midst of feverish dreams and late night suffocating coughs...
i wondered of an exsitance we could not see..
like ghosts.

what if they surrounded us...
and saw EVERYthing we did...
its would be surveillance but in the supernatural existance.
like little jesuses and gods surrounding us and obversing our every move and thought.
that would be scary.

so... for my grad show.
what if.. you were meant to see people walking around on the cctv monitors.
but. instead you saw the same space , but not the people...
eeeeerrrrrie? i want it to be....

a video that captures no time and space.
hmm i need to think it out better.

Arlington Arts Center Review - Part 3
Wrapping up the New Art Examined show at the Arlington Arts Center, below are six more images I’d like to discuss. I’ll have one more post about the “Black Factory” that I happened to see at the AAC on Saturday as well.

Daniel Busey’s (American U.) “King Me” is an interactive installation that caught my attention. When you approach the piece, you’re not quite sure what you’re in for. When I walked in front of the camera (as seen in the second image above), I found myself involved in the Rodney King beating. That wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. The question became, why am I here? Am I supposed to be a newscaster reporting on the event? If so, what should I say? Why am I reporting on it long after it occurred? On the other hand, am I “involved” in the beating? Do I have my back turned on police brutality? What am I supposed to do about it?

Though the piece has a bit of corniness to it – doesn’t it remind you of some tourist trap photo booth at a theme park – it does ask some interesting questions. My question to the artist: why use footage of an event from many years ago? Why not something current instead?

Cockatoo Island...

Every time i attend the Sydney Biennale there seems to be mixed emotions of joy and anger... Perhaps it will be better if i were to leave all anticipation and excitement and attend it with no expectation at all... All in all... with the Biennale pros and cons fly all over the place leaving you with the complexity of questioning what 'contemporaneity' is...

But on another note... Cockatoo Island is really an amazing space... The are so many buildings and mazes of tunnels, halls and doors. I just wonder why there wasn't MORE works of art at Cockatoo Island. They were so spread out and hidden. To me i guess Cockatoo Island was more aesthetic in space than the art works provided. Other than Keith Richardson's work which was site specific, the huge blocks of old empty ghostly looking vacant spaces were so visually aesthetic. I now definitely know for a fact that i want to do an installation of some sort....

1. Instant development on film... very cool indeed!

2. When shot close enough the flash hides all unnecessary flaws (eg. redness, pimples)

The lines create a boundary and space is formed.

To see into something in a deeper level one must go closer. Rather than looking at a large print of a space in a gallery. One must be IN the space to feel the full capacity of the vibe it creates. It would be interesting to see the print come alive as an installation.

The great thing about most galleries in New York is that you can take pictures. The MOMA has 6 glorious levels of art that you can snap away.

If you have only known the textbook version of Pollock, The Wheel or The Campbell soup tins, going away to see these in real life should be added to your bucket list.

However not all the artworks are snap free.
